Take The Lead Winston-Salem To Benefit The Homeless
Apr/100
Take the Lead Winston-Salem is a community-wide dance competition featuring some of the city’s shining “stars.” They will team up with professional dancers for a spirited event similar to the popular television show “Dancing with the Stars,” with a goal of raising $100,000 for the Bethesda Center for the Homeless.
Bethesda Center for the Homeless is the largest emergency shelter for men and women in Forsyth County. Bethesda served more than 600 of the community’s homeless during 2009, and has assisted nearly 200 men and women in moving from shelters into their own housing during the last three years.
Now is the time for a large, community-wide effort in support of the homeless to initiate the largest fundraising event in the Bethesda Center’s history. National trends point to an increasing homeless population in the next three to five years:
- Rising evictions and foreclosures as a result of job losses in families teetering on the financial edge
- Returning veterans unable to transition back into society
As a dance event that is sure to involve stepping on a few toes, Take the Lead Winston-Salem will shine light on the importance of helping those in our community who are homeless get back on their feet.
Money is raised through your votes, so vote early and often! You can vote for as many dancers as you want and as often as you want! The dancing “stars” recruit friends, family members and others in the community to purchase $10 votes — the cost to Bethesda Center of providing a person with one day & one night’s shelter, supplies and food. Voting continues until May 6. The pair of dancers with the most votes will be named winners of Take the Lead Winston-Salem at the Finale Event in downtown Winston-Salem at The Embassy Suites on May 6, 2010.

Owner’s Love One Park Vista In Downtown Winston-Salem!
Mar/100

After 16 years in a large house with a lot of oak leaves to rake, followed by 24 years in a suburban condo with secluded green space, we moved in to One Park Vista last October. We wanted to be part of what’s happening downtown.
There’s a whole new life here. We walk to the bank, post office, drugstore, concerts, ballet, and lots of coffee shops. We see a kaleidoscope of people. We watch the sun rise from our east-facing balcony and we watch it set – yes, set – in the reflections of the glass buildings around us.
We take advantage of the Strollway just steps from our building and watch the bulbs sprout, azaleas bloom, and trees leaf out and eventually turn their reds and yellows. Birds are finding their way to our geraniums. Children and dogs play in the park below our balcony.
The first thing everybody asks is “But where do you get your groceries?” We do our big shopping at the same big supermarkets where we’ve always shopped, but we can also walk to two farmers’ markets and a country store. And if we don’t feel like cooking, we just walk out our door and pick from a dozen or more restaurants on our street or within a few blocks. There are days when we even forget we have a car.

One Park Vista - Downtown Winston-Salem Excellence
Jan/100
Source: Winston-Salem Journal
By Cindy Hodnett
Kerry Avant and Thad Llewallen, developers of the upscale One Park Vista luxury condominium project on Fourth Street, were recently honored bythe Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership with a 2009 Downtown Excellence Award.
Avant and Llewallen received the award in recognition of their work on One Park Vista, joining Piedmont Craftsmen Inc., The Russell Agency, Shapiro Walker Design and Richard Redding as 2009 recipients. A cornerstone of upscale downtown development, One Park Vista is centrally located and offers easy walking distance to many attractions. Dozens of restaurants and shops are just blocks away from the building’s entrance, along with the corporate headquarters of several major Triad employers, allowing residents to leave their cars safely parked in the One Park Vista garage for days on end.
“I love to invite people down to One Park Vista after dark to see the night scene, the people, the lights,” said listing agent Michael Ryden of Leonard Ryden Burr Real Estate. “It’s like, ‘Is this Winston-Salem; is this my city?’ I think it’s important for people to know that downtown is a happening place filled with art, music, theater, restaurants and a lot of nightlife.”

“The Downtown Arts District Association (DADA) is a neighborhood organization of artist studios, residences and businesses that is dedicated to the promotion of arts and culture through education, entertainment, community interaction and trade.”
DADA is an organization consisting of artists, sculptors, photographers, interior and graphic designers, calligraphers, wood workers, jewelers, fiber artists and other disciplines in the arts. DADA has restaurants, retail shops, antiques, residences, business offices, shoe shop and a variety store located in this eclectic area of downtown between 5th and 7th Streets along Trade and Liberty Streets. Organized in 1998, DADA began to raise awareness of the arts community and the arts district in Winston-Salem. Through its first Friday Gallery Hops and co-sponsorship of various city events, DADA has infused the downtown with new life and energy, helping to build the arts district itself into a vibrant community. Its stated goal is to alter conventional perceptions about downtown –just as the post-WWI abstract art movement of the same name set out to emancipate the imagination.
